Mind Over Money: 4 Ways to Reverse Your Overbuying Habits Using Psychology

mindovermoneyOne of the biggest factors in effective money-saving is also one of the least talked-about. And that is psychology. For some reason, many of us don’t think about our finances from a psychological perspective – but in many cases the state of our finances can also be a manifestation of our approach to life.

Exploring the psychological aspect of your money habits won’t just help you find ways to save – it can also give you new insights into what motivates you in life generally, and hopefully help you look at things from a new perspective.

So, how can you go about using psychology to help you save money? We’ve put together this short guide to outline a selection of the main things to consider. [Read more…]

20 Better Things To Do On Black Friday Than Shop

blackfridayIt’s that time of the year again! Yep, Black Friday is almost upon us. While it’s one of the most anticipated days of the year for some, I’m not that excited. It’s almost strange to say that because I love a good bargain. But throw in a crazy crowd of people and I’m out of there.

Years ago, I used to love Black Friday. In fact, there was one year I headed to the mall right after Thanksgiving dinner to try to beat the crowds (to my surprise, it was plenty crowded already!). But the more I think about it, the more I realize how crazy it all is. While some deals are great, we can tend to get all worked up over nothing. We rush into stores in the wee hours of the morning to spend our money on things we don’t really need.

Instead of joining the madness this year, I’m planning on spending my time in a more meaningful and/or fun way. And you should join me in doing the same! Here’s a list of 20 things to do that are better than shopping on Black Friday: [Read more…]

10 Things You Shouldn’t Buy Used

10thingsyoushouldn'tbuyused

One of my rules of thumb when it comes to shopping is to never buy anything at suggested retail price. If I can, I almost always wait for a sale or promotion. Of course that doesn’t always work out. So sometimes, I look at used or refurbished items. However, while I love eBay and Craigslist, I’m not always totally comfortable buying things used. I kind of get weirded out not knowing who used it and if it’s actually in good condition. You just never know. While there are some things I would be comfortable buying used, there other things where I just wouldn’t take the risk. Here are 10 things you shouldn’t used (IMHO!):

Deal Alert: Amazon Prime Only $72 ($27 Off!)

amazonprime

I normally don’t post deals and steals type stuff here but you all know how much I love Amazon so I’ll make an exception.

This Saturday only (1/24), Amazon will be offering a 1-year membership to Amazon Prime for only $72. Regular price is $99 so that’s $27 off! That’s the cheapest it’s been since the price hike last year (Prime was $79 back then). For those of you who don’t know, the perks of Prime include free 2-day shipping, access to Prime Instant Video (lots of free TV shows and movies streaming), and cloud storage. This is a one-day only deal in celebration of Transparent’s win at the Golden Globes (Transparent is an Amazon original series). Also, Amazon will be offering Transparent free to stream all day Saturday, Prime or not. I’ve been wanting to watch this show so this might be the perfect time. (More info here)

We’ve had an Amazon Prime membership for the past 3 years and love it. I would happily pay the regular $99 price so $72 is a steal. It seems like a lot but I feel like it’s well worth it because I shop on Amazon so much. Here are some reasons I love Prime:

  • Amazon has the best selection and great prices. Enuff said!
  • With Prime, I no longer have to make trips to the store so much. It’s so convenient since I get everything in 2 days or less. Saves me time, energy, and transportation costs.
  • I also frequently use their Instant Video service. Lots of shows and movies to choose from. If you don’t have Netflix, this is a good alternative.

So yea, if you couldn’t tell already, I’m a Prime fan and highly recommend it if you’re thinking about signing up!

And with that…have a wonderful weekend!

A Frugal Holiday Gift Guide (No Shopping Required*)

frugalholidaygiftguideBuying gifts for other people can be seriously overwhelming. Sometimes, I just want to give people 20 bucks and call it a day but I guess that’s frowned upon. I’m usually a last minute gift shopper, which is why we’re less than 15 days away from Christmas and I still haven’t done any shopping. But that’s OK because I actually don’t have to do THAT much shopping this year.

I do have a few Secret Santa gifts to pick up but aside from that, I’m not really doing actual gifts this year. My family and most of my close friends tend to forgo gift giving since it gives everyone a headache and we all just end up with sweaters and socks we don’t need. Instead, we prefer to do nice things for each other or, if we’re feeling adventurous, make something. As I brainstorm about what I’m going to do or make, I decided to put together my own frugal gift guide. Most of these things don’t require any shopping since you can do it for free, do it online or get everything you need in your own home (with a few exceptions, hence the *). Here we go:
